Jhansi is the largest city of Bundelkhand and its best-known name, forever linked with Rani Lakshmibai and the uprising of 1857. The hilltop Jhansi Fort, built by Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha in the early 17th century, still overlooks the old city. Today Jhansi is the region's main railway, education, and trading hub.
