Chitrakoot is one of India's holiest places, revered as the forest where Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana spent much of their exile in the Ramayana. Pilgrims circle the sacred Kamadgiri hill and bathe at Ramghat on the Mandakini river. Rajapur, on the Yamuna, is traditionally held to be the birthplace of the poet-saint Tulsidas.
