Jalaun district, with its headquarters at Orai, lies on the northern edge of Bundelkhand along the Yamuna. The historic town of Kalpi, on the Yamuna's banks, was an important fort town and a centre of the 1857 uprising, and is still known for its traditional handmade paper.
