The Alha-Khand is one of the most famous folk epics of North India, particularly beloved in Bundelkhand. It tells the story of Alha and Udal, two legendary warrior brothers who served King Paramardideva (Parmal) of the Chandela dynasty in 12th-century Mahoba. The epic describes their 52 battles against Prithviraj Chauhan of Ajmer and Delhi. Udal, the younger brother, is portrayed as the greatest warrior, while Alha is known for his devotion and immortality (he is said to still be alive). The ballad is sung during the rainy season across Bundelkhand and is considered the martial epic of the region. The "Alha" singing tradition is a UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage of the region.
