Musical Genius of Mughal Court

One of India's greatest musicians, from the Bundelkhand region.
Tansen (c. 1493–1586), born Ramtanu Pandey in Behat near Gwalior in the Bundelkhand region, is one of the most influential musicians in Indian history. He was one of the Navaratnas (nine jewels) of Emperor Akbar's court. Legends credit him with creating several ragas and miraculous musical feats, such as lighting lamps with Raga Deepak and bringing rain with Raga Megh Malhar. His tomb in Gwalior is a pilgrimage site for musicians. The annual Tansen Music Festival is held in his honor.
